Ozempic, Wegovy, Mounjaro and loose skin on the face
Ozempic and Wegovy are injected drugs that contain the same active ingredient, semaglutide.
Ozempic is prescribed just for diabetes, while Wegovy contains a higher amount of semaglutide and it is additionally prescribed for weight loss and typically leads to an average of 12.4% of body weight in non-diabetic people). Furthermore, Ozempic is also used for weight loss unofficially.
(Tirzepatide, an analog of semaglutide, with the commercial name Mounjaro, has a similar action and it is used for the same purposes.)
As these drugs can lead to quick weight loss, the face does not have enough time to contract back to its previous tone.
In fact, in most cases after weight loss, facial and body skin never regains its previous tone and elasticity.
There is just too much excess skin left over after significant weight loss, sudden or slow, with Ozempic/Wegovy/Mounjaro or without.
The most radical solution to the so called “Ozempic face” or “Wegovy face” is a surgical face lift, that essentially removes excess skin, pulling the facial features up and back towards the head.
For those who do not want to undergo facial surgery there are two options:
injected fillers
skin tightening treatments (destructive and non-destructive).
Skin tightening for Wegovy / Ozempic face with deep tissue radiofrequency
Strong, deep-acting (but never painful) radiofrequency is the best SAFE solution for skin tightening on the face and body, either after Ozempic/Wegovy/Mounjaro weight loss or any other type of weight loss.
Deep-acting, high-power radiofrequency stimulates collagen contraction, collagen/elastin synthesis and also offers a boost in circulation, leading to tighter, more lifted, more elastic skin and an overall more youthful/healthy looking complexion.
Deep-acting, high-power radiofrequency is a non-destructive treatment, meaning it aims to stimulate change, rather than burn the skin with the hope that skin will regenerate after the burn.
Deep-acting, high-power radiofrequency is provided with a continuous movement of the applicator and it never creates internal connective tissue temperatures above 47º.
This allows it to be provided without anaesthetic creams, there is no downtime at all and under capable hands have a high safety rate (99.5%+ at our clinic).
Skin tightening for Ozempic / Wegovy face with destructive radiofrequency or HIFU
The much hyped microneedling RF, extreme intensity HIFU and extreme intensity RF aim to literally burn the internal connective tissues, with the aim to stimulate scar-like collagen tissue as a result, that would in turn tighten the skin.
Such techniques are based on stamp-like action, not continuous movement, reach temperatures of 65-90ºC and require anaesthetic creams or anaesthetic injections to be administered, due to the extreme pain they cause.
As destructive RF/ultrasound are based on skin damage before skin regeneration, there is significant downtime, things can easily go awry (28% of reviewers here) and consequently their safety rate is very low.
We do not offer and would never undergo such unsafe technologies.
Fillers for Ozempic face
Fillers do fill wrinkles and areas previously “occupied” by fat.
However:
the result can look quite artificial
filler injections need to be repeated every few months
there are the inherent dangers of adverse reactions
fillers are to be used in small amounts in small areas, not to fill entire large facial areas - in the latter case they just don’t look right at all
fillers do not do anything for the actual skin thickness / firmness itself
Of course there are fillers that stimulate collagen production and last up to two years or more, but if something goes wrong the disfigurement will also last up to two years or more.
For most people it goes well, but those for whom it doesn’t go well, do the multi-thousand pound rounds in Harley Street trying to find a solution.
As it is obvious, we are against fillers unless they are absolutely necessary, and would not either receive them or offer them, but it’s up to each individual to decide what is best of them, if they suffer from Ozempic/Wegovy/Mounjaro face.
Are there any other methods to tighten loose skin after weight loss with Ozempic?
All other techniques, not mentioned above, such as infrared/red LED treatment, microcurrents, electromagnetic stimulation etc, work very, very slowly, so there is no point discussing them here.
They are just about good for maintenance but not much for improvement.
Botox does not tighten anything
BTW, Botox is not mentioned here because botox does not tighten anything. By definition Botox works by relaxing muscles (the opposite of tightening) and consequently easing wrinkles created by muscular contractions of the skin.
Botox has ZERO effect on connective tissue tightness or elasticity. If someone tells you that botox can tighten/lift your skin, they are taking you for a fool.
All in all, after losing weight - with Ozempic or without - there are four options to tighten the skin:
Surgery
Fillers
Destructive RF and HIFU
Stimulating RF
We presented here all the options, according to safety, effectiveness and utility and you can make up your own mind, according to your needs.
One last question: what happens if I stop taking Ozempic / Wegovy / Mounjaro?
Obviously, like with any other weight loss method, if you don’t exercise / eat healthily after weight loss and after you stop Ozempic / Wegovy / Mounjaro, your weight will go up again.
There is no such thing as a permanent weight loss method, regardless of how much we would all love to eat all the chocolate cake and ice cream we want, watch Netflix on the couch for the entire weekend, drink a bottle of red wine every night or all of the above, and not put on weight.
