Lipedema symptom relief with ultrasound massage and infrared light therapy

TL;DR: Lipedema, a genetic condition primarily affecting women, causes uncontrollable adipose tissue expansion in the legs and arms post-puberty. While healthy diet and exercise may slow its progression, specialist liposuction, notably in Austria, Germany, and increasingly the UK, is the primary solution. Non-surgical treatments like deep-acting, high-power ultrasound massage combined with high-power red/infrared phototherapy can alleviate symptoms such as inflammation, poor circulation, fibrosis, tiredness, and water retention. These treatments, applied to calves, thighs, and buttocks, enhance circulation, reduce puffiness, and improve quality of life pre- and post-surgery. Low-power treatments are ineffective due to the thickness of lipedema adipose tissue. Non-surgical options, alongside lifestyle changes, can slow progression and enhance well-being.

Ultrasound massage and red/infrared light therapy for tired, heavy, painful legs in lipedema

Lipedema, inflammation, pain and water retention

Lipedema is a genetic condition which mainly affects women and where the adipose tissue of the legs and arms gradually expands uncontrollably after puberty. Healthy diet and exercise do help slow down its progression but they may not be sufficient to stop the development of lipedema completely or to reverse it.

The only real solution to lipedema reduction is specialist liposuction. It seems that Austria and Germany are the best places to have lipedema surgery, as many surgeons in those countries specialise in it. However, the UK is catching up fast in this sector with more and more surgeons providing lipedema liposuction.

Unfortunately treatments that do help with other fat reduction, especially cellulite fat reduction, do not sufficiently help with lipedema fat reduction. For this reason we do not use our deep-acting, high-power radiofrequency and deep-acting, high-power ultrasound cavitation technologies for lipedema reduction, despite them being highly successful for cellulite reduction.

Lipedema is usually accompanied by adipose tissue inflammation, poor circulation and fibrosis, both before and even after surgery. These physiological changes are experienced as tired, heavy legs, fat tissue pain and water retention.

Deep-acting, high-power ultrasound massage and high-power phototherapy for lipedema management

At the clinic we successfully use a combination of deep-acting, high-power ultrasound cavitation and massage, to boost circulation and help break down fibrosis and thereby also reduce inflammation and puffiness, in lipedema.

This has an instant relieving effect in the feeling of tiredness and heaviness on the legs and it is very popular with lipedema sufferers.

We now combine our lipedema ultrasound massage with high-power red and especially near infrared light therapy*, which is known to boost energy production in cell mitochondria, resulting in increased effectiveness for the ultrasound massage and an overall healing / well-being effect.

(* Light therapy is also known as phototherapy, photobiomodulation (PBM) or low level light therapy / LLLT.)

The treatment, which is applied on the calves, thighs and buttocks, is not just painless but actually pleasant and improves the quality of life of lipedema patients, both before and after surgery.

Unfortunately, low-power or superficial ultrasound doesn’t really work for lipedema, neither low-power light therapy does, as the thickness of adipose tissue in lipedema requires stronger, deeper treatment, both light therapy-wise and ultrasound-wise.

However, for very inflamed/sensitive lipedema cases we start at very low ultrasound intensity and only in rare cases we may have to refuse treatment. Phototherapy, on the other hand, is absolutely fine and very useful for all lipedema cases - heavy or light.

Ultrasound massage, radiofrequency and light therapy for cellulite reduction and skin tightening in lipedema sufferers

Most women with lipedema suffer from cellulite and skin laxity.

The combination of deep-acting, high-power radiofrequency, deep-acting, high-power ultrasound cavitation and high-power LED phototherapy is the strongest possible treatment known today for cellulite removal and skin tightening.

So in addition to improving lipedema sufferers’ quality of life, this treatment can also help address the aesthetic aspects of lipedema, by reducing cellulite and boosting skin firmness.

Surgical vs non-surgical lipedema treatments

All in all, although non-surgical treatments may not be able to reverse lipedema, they can improve women’s quality of life and in some cases also partially help slow down or stop lipedema development, always when combined with exercise and healthy nutrition.
