Can you overdo it with LED therapy?

Can you overdo LED light therapy?

You can indeed overdo it with any therapy, however safe it might be

LED light therapy, also known as low level light therapy (LLLT), is rightly acknowledged as a very, very safe type of treatment, with minimal and rare adverse reactions.

Indeed, treatment with LED light can only go wrong if provided in a very, very stupid way. This is usually the case when extremely high intensity, extremely long treatment times or a combination of both is utilised.

Luckily, most home and professional devices on the market are not strong enough for this to easily occur but it is still possible.

As an example, even low-end LED masks can cause irritation in most people if used for very long periods of time. Of course, stronger LED masks and professional ones can cause such irritation faster, if not used properly.

However, provided that LED light treatment times are kept at a reasonable level and reasonable intensity, the chance of irritation or skin damage is very low.

How to keep LED light treatment safe

It is always important to:

  • Consider skin hypersensitivity

  • Avoid the use of skin products before LED therapy unless you're totally sure that they are safe and that they will not cause photosensitivity

  • Avoid too frequent treatment

  • Avoid excessively long treatment

  • Avoid excessively high intensity treatment

  • Ensure that the device used actually emits the wavelength and the power density that it is supposed to emit

  • Make sure you understand how LED light therapy works and know what is the best wavelength and the highest power density that can be used for a specific type of tissue and depth of tissue

In summary, if treatment is provided by one of the better machines and with a good treatment protocol, the chance of irritation is extremely low.

Given that not everybody has the luxury to be properly trained in LED light therapy, it is always wise to err on the side of caution, even if that means slower results.

In fact, by providing LED light therapy at excessive doses, you do not accelerate results, you actually inhibit them and may even cause irritation.

Indeed, obsessive people will always find a way to cause irritation and overdo it with any type of therapy, including one of the safest possible ones, such as LED light therapy.

LED device quality is important

As mentioned on the last bullet point, another important consideration is that of the device’s wavelength and power density accuracy.

You would be surprised by how often lower-end LED device output is all over the place. Many such LED devices emit much, much lower power density than stated on the box, while some of them may emit much higher intensity light than stated.

And quite often, lower-end LED devices tend to emit a totally wrong light wavelength, especially as the LED device heats up during treatment.

All the above can affect LED treatment safety, as well as efficacy.
