High quality LED devices by definition can not be cheap
LED light therapy is extremely popular these days for both health and aesthetic applications (pain reduction, mood improvement / relaxation, anti-ageing etc) because of their gentleness, effectiveness and good safety profile - something that cannot be said by harsh laser, injectable or skin ablating treatments.
And this is a common question we hear: “Why good LED masks (and professional LED devices) so expensive?”
Well the answer is: “they are not”.
In the West we are addicted to cheap imported goods and so we believe everything should be dirt cheap. And indeed, many LED masks are dirt cheap but, as many people understand, they are of poor quality, while the higher quality devices are considered “expensive”.
A good home-use LED mask (or even professional LED device for use at clinics) must use high quality LED bulbs that provide what it says on the tin: red or infrared light of a specific frequency and specific intensity, constantly throughout the treatment.
Plus it has to undergo testing and receive certification for the above. Plus, it has to have an overall safe and aesthetically pleasing design and must be able to last for years, not weeks.
All the above cost money and this is the reason quality devices are considered “expensive”.
Do cheap LED light masks work? Not really and they may be unsafe.
On the other hand, many cheap devices do contain LEDs that are 1/4 of the power claimed on the label, which basically constitutes fraud. They also emit light which may be as much as 20% away from the frequency in nanometres stated on the box. This makes the device less effective and even dangerous.
Furthermore, for many such devices both frequency and power change as the LEDs are heated during the therapy session.
And finally, quite a few cheap devices may last a few weeks and depending on where they are bought from there may be with zero chance of repair or refund.
So, yes cheap can end up being expensive and expensive, if it lasts long and provides a superior service, may end up prove economical.
The above comments apply equally to home devices and professional devices. Most cheap professional devices are wholly inadequate for professional treatment.
At the clinic we have a top of the range equipment and there are perhaps another 3-4 machines we would pay money for, but we would not touch the rest with a bargepole.
Dome and canopy shaped LED devices vs LED masks: cost is higher but effectiveness and quality of treatment is higher too
Furthermore, there is a big design flaw in LED masks, as opposed to LED dome- or canopy-shaped devices, for either home or clinic use.
LED masks are too close to the skin and by definition they cannot provide uniform treatment. This means that intensity has to be low to avoid treatment hotspots - and consequently over-treatment and irritation/inflammation.
In turn, this results in inefficient treatment or the necessity of daily - even twice daily - treatments.
In contrast, a higher power LED dome or canopy would provide strong, uniform treatment in as little as 10 or 20 minutes and would necessitate treatments twice a week, as opposed to twice a day.
At the clinic we use the highest power, highest quality canopy device on the market and the difference between anything else we have tried is huge - even the semi-professional / up-market home-use dome-shaped device by the same manufacturer.
Indeed, we paid A LOT of money for an LED device but it offers fast, efficient, safe treatment to our clients, so it was well worth it.
All in all, you get what you pay for.
