Can you take collagen and whey protein together?

Whey is for muscles, collagen is for skin and joints

Whey protein powder (10-40g/day) is usually taken in combination with resistance exercise, as it provides the exact aminoacid profile to help build muscles.

Hydrolysed collagen protein (5-20g/day) is usually taken to help support joints and boost skin firmness, sometimes in combination with radiofrequency treatment, as it has the exact aminoacid profile for this purpose: it contains more glycine, proline and hydroxyproline.

Hydroxyproline, one of the above aminoacids that comprise collagen, is only found in skin and not in muscles.

In terms of protein powders, hydroxyproline is only found in hydrolysed collagen protein, not any other protein - vegan or non-vegan.

Mixing collagen and whey protein powders: does it make sense?

There is no reason why the two sources of protein should not be combined. In fact, by mixing the two proteins you will get a richer aminoacid profile. Just make sure you don’t take an overall excessive amount of protein.

So if you would normally take 25g of whey OR 10g of collagen on a specific day, reduce to:

  • Perhaps 20g of whey PLUS 5g of collagen

  • Or 15g of whey PLUS 10g of collagen

This is because high amounts of collagen protein (>10g/per serving) can be difficult to digest, while whey is usually fine even with 30-40g portions.

Like in everything else in life, balance is the key here:

  • Too little protein (less than 50g/day in total) is really bad for muscle and skin maintenance.

  • Too much protein is a waste and taxing for your kidneys too, especially when protein supplements are combined with an overall protein rich diet (more than 100g/day in total)

What about mixing egg, soy or other protein with collagen protein? What about ‘vegan collagen’ powders?

Of course, you can also mix egg, soy or any other protein you wish with collagen powder.

If you are vegan you can use a ‘vegan collagen’ powder, i.e. protein powder which contains more glycine, hydroxyproline and proline in it, to mimic collagen’s aminoacid profile.

In this case there is no much point mixing the vegan collagen powder with another vegan protein powder - just stick to the vegan collagen one.

(Whey powder is worth mixing with collagen powder as milk whey also has immune compounds and growth factors naturally contained in it.)
