To prevent cellulite, fall in love with vegetables, salads and seaweed - and spice up your life with herbs and spices

This is one of the most common questions we are asked: “What are the best foods to fight cellulite?”.

To which the instant answer is: “Above all else, have as many low calorie, high fibre, high polyphenol/carotenoid foods as you can”.

But why is that?

(From this point onwards we will refer to vegetables, salads and seaweeds as simply ‘vegetables‘ and herbs and spices as simply ‘herbs’.)

Vegetables and herbs are low in calories

No need to discuss this really, it’s pretty obvious

Vegetables and herbs are high in fibre

Vegetables and herbs:

  • Fill you up without calories and prevent you from consuming too much fat or carbs

  • Help balance your gut microbiota (i.e. boost the good bacteria in your gut), which has an anti-inflammatory effect and can indirectly prevent water retention

  • Plus they keep you regular, which indirectly also has an effect on cellulite

Vegetables and herbs are high in polyphenol/carotenoids (what some people would identify as “antioxidants”)

Most carotenoids and polyphenols have a multi-prong anti-cellulite effect. They inhibit:

  • Fat accumulation

  • Inflammation

  • Water retention

  • Glycation

  • Oxidative damage

  • Collagen/elastin breakdown

  • Fibrosis

In short, polyphenols and carotenoids are the ultimate anti-cellulite nutrients, as they that act on ALL seven aspects of cellulite.

Which are those cellulite-fighting foods then?

No need to discriminate and be picky, simply eat as many types of vegetables, herbs and spices and as much as possible of them (within reason, of course).

It can be broccoli or lettuce; fennel or basil; turmeric or aniseed. It doesn’t matter.

  • Just consume as many vegetables as you can: cooked or raw, as a salad or as a side dish, whole or in a smoothie/juice.

  • And enrich the taste of your foods with lots of herbs and spices, again as part of a meal or as part of a smoothie/juice. Yesterday I watched a cooking competition where one of the contestants used 17 herbs and spices for her dish. Although a bit excessive, that’s generally the idea.

Just go easy on spices that may irritate (chilli, garlic etc) and on too much seaweed that can overload you with iodine.

Of course, do everything within reason - no crazy obsessions like two litres of carrot juice a day.

Just replace some (but not all) of your carb and fat foods with veggies, salads, herbs, spices and some seaweed, which will offer you lots of valuable fibre and polyphenols/carotenoids.

For cellulite prevention, have more protein

Why is that?

Because after decades of brainwashing with faddish nutritional theories and ideas, the fact is that most women do not consume enough protein.

Skin and muscles are made of protein, so there is not much more to be said about it: if you don’t eat enough protein you will gradually lose skin and muscles.

Furthermore, most vegans do not consume enough protein. If you are a vegan you can take a high quality vegan protein powder or, even better, vegan collagen powder.

For cellulite prevention, have more oily fish

On another note, HUFA (highly unsaturated omega-3 fatty acids) from oily fish / fish oil is the only kind of fat that does not make you put on weight and can actually help you lose some weight. It is also anti-inflammatory and can help balance blood lipids.

Most people do not consume enough omega-3 fatty acids, so having more oily fish or taking fish oil is a good idea. If you are vegan you can take vegan highly unsaturated omega-3 fatty acid capsules.

For cellulite prevention, have more berries

And finally, let’s talk about berries.

Berries are almost as good as veg, herbs and spices, as they contain high levels of polyphenols (and some times carotenoids) with a pretty low level of sugars.

Eat as many whole berries and smoothies as you wish, but not juices, as even the low amount of sugars berries contain can quickly raise sugar levels, if they absorbed quickly from a juice.

More fibre, polyphenols/carotenoids, oily fish, protein and berries

By consuming more fibre, polyphenols/carotenoids, oily fish and protein you will provide your connective tissue (skin, fascia), adipose tissue and blood vessels with all the nutrients they need to help prevent:

  • Hypodermal fat accumulation

  • Chronic, low grade inflammation

  • Water retention / poor circulation

  • Collagen glycation

  • Oxidative / free radical damage

  • Collagen/elastin breakdown

  • Collagen fibrosis

In a few words, by consuming those foods you will help prevent cellulite and keep skin firm and healthy.

Less alcohol, no smoking/vaping, lots of physical activity/exercise, no hormonal contraception

Add the above measures and you have the ultimate anti-cellulite, anti-ageing lifestyle that will assist you in:

  • Preventing skin looseness/cellulite, if you don’t have any

  • Or reducing skin looseness/cellulite, if you already have them, on their own or in combination with course of deep-acting, high-power radiofrequency and deep acting, high-power ultrasound cavitation, the strongest SAFE anti-cellulite technologies known today and a real cellulite cream, i.e. one with multiple, high-purity anti-cellulite actives in high concentrations
