Can ultrasonic cavitation be used for skin tightening?

Deep-acting, high-power ultrasound cavitation is one of the two most effective SAFE methods for cellulite reduction, especially when provided by a well-trained, experienced and knowledgable therapist (deep-acting, high-power radiofrequency is the other one).

Normally cavitation is not recommended for skin tightening, as it only exerts a weak skin tightening effect, when applied as usual.

However, if ultrasound cavitation is provided with high power equipment and in a smaller area so that the epidermis can reach 40-42ºC (always within safety parameters) then cavitation can also be used for skin tightening.

As ultrasound used for aesthetics is of 30-90 kHz frequency, which acts relatively superficially, it will mainly affect the dermis and not so much the deeper tissues (hypodermis, superficial fascia, intermediate fascia), which also need tightening.

On the other hand, strong ultrasound cavitation applied for more than 20 minutes is known to occasionally cause skin irritation.

So deep-acting, high-power radiofrequency, if available, is preferable to cavitation for the purposes of skin tightening, as it:

• Acts deeper

• Rarely causes skin irritation (if provided properly by an experienced therapist)

So, in summary, cavitation can indeed tighten the skin superficially with certain setups, but RF is far better at skin tightening.
